Immerse yourself in the Hawai’i tradition of Lomi Lomi at Hawai’i Natural Therapy
Hawaiian Lomi Lomi History
Hawai’i offers gorgeous landscapes, from the clear oceans to the echoing mountain ranges; the energy is undeniable. The island and its people are connected to a wisdom and healing that has been passed on for generations. One of these age-old traditions is called ‘Lomi Lomi’. Early Polynesian settlers brought the practice of Lomi Lomi to Hawai’i; Hawaiians then crafted a unique style of their own. The Lomi Lomi practice was once outlawed throughout the Hawaiian Islands. Lomi means “rub” or “knead” in a gentle manner. Traditional native healers used Lomi Lomi as luxury and aid in digestion by the ruling chief, as well as a form of restorative massage within the family.
The essence of this traditional massage is focused on complete and total balance of self; connecting the body to the mind to achieve maximum healing potential. Lomi Lomi holds the belief that memories are not just stored in the brain and mind, yet in every cell of the body. Traditional Hawai’i culture focuses on the health of the entire existence, including spirit. Healing with the power of Lomi Lomi is a holistic experience, designed to guide your mind, body and spirit into full alignment and rejuvenation.
A combination of massage techniques, nut oils, breathing, [often] dance to restore energy and ease the body. The massage works into the muscles with flowing strokes, creating deep relaxation for the client. The healing effects will have you wanting to come back for more!
The aim of Lomi Lomi is not for the therapist to heal you themselves, but rather act as a conductor to enable healing to occur. During your Lomi Lomi massage, the therapist will work deeply into the muscles with continuous and gentle, flowy strokes. The fluid-like movements of the hands and attention around the joints helps break down any blocked energy that you may be experiencing physically or mentally.
This is a full-body massage which includes: arms and hands, legs and feet, neck and back, as well as the stomach and buttocks (keep in mind areas of the body can be omitted based upon comfort level). Rather than being covered with towels or a full sheet, you may have just one towel or a small sheet to preserve modesty. These steps are taken to avoid interrupting the continuous flow of the massage throughout the body. The continuous, gentle strokes are designed to support the body as it lets go of its old habits and energies, which may be causing you stress and strains or muscle tension. There is no guideline or set of steps for this style; the therapist will work uniquely with your body, using rhythmic strokes to release and shift build up of stress and tension. Speed of the massage can vary depending on the response of your body. These techniques are used to free up your energy flow and give a restorative feeling throughout your body.
Music has been used as a powerful tool during sessions to guide choreography of hands during massage. You may hear your therapist humming during your session when tuned into the energy in the room. As a part of the healing experience essential oils are used and thought to have many different positive effects.
Why should we use Essential Oils?
Lomi Lomi is used to soothe many things in Hawaiian culture, such as children with upset stomachs or women in labor. It can cure a wide range of health conditions and imbalance that might occur within the body.
